Pets are forever not just for Xmas!

Hadnt written a blog for awhile now so i figured i might put a little something here Today i want to make a clear statement about pet adoption , whether it be a cat, kitten , adult or a puppy..Its becoming very clear in some places that people are either unaware of the adoptions from reputable shelters vs buying from breeders..Yes of course you have a preference for a specific breed of kitten or puppy and why not find them in a breeders listing of sales of specific animals...
I worked for 10 years as a Law Enforcement Officer in service to the Nova Scotia SPCA ..I also had a feline rescue and did animal Control for the Town nearby..Alot of abandoned pets got passed over in the shelters because there was and still are backyard breeders..People who have no scruples and sold sick and cheap knock offs of what they referred to as a specific breed...Ergo " you get what you pay for."
We here in Atlantic Canada have some really great rescue groups and animal shelters ..These shelters and rescue groups are always competing with ,backyard breeders and when someone ends up buying an animal from the backyard breeder most generally end up in shelters anyway..The so called backyard breeder has no sympathy for the buyer , they sell to make money , they sell sick animals and for a large sum of money you are stuck with a sick animal that may or may not live..Vets all over not only Nova Scotia but all over the world see this all the time...
My biggest peeve is those Breeders advertising at Xmas every year sales of puppies and kittens ..I never supported any breeder whether it was a reputable one or not ..as a Law Enforcement Officer it would be a daily task for me to go out on Investigations and finding dogs tied out after the puppy novelty wore off or the cat was tossed out after the kitten grew up ...It was heartbreaking to find these animals were bought from breeders at Xmas or maybe another holiday and tossed aside when they were no longer a novelty..I housed hundreds of cats throughout the years and never had a problem with any of them..
People ask " why do people do this to their pets ?" answer because they can. No one cares and most times when the bad pet owners toss out their costly boughten pets , someone else cares for them...thus the original owners get away with that..and the circle continues..go out , buy another pet from a backyard breeder and do the same thing.
I have a particular disgust for those backyard breeders when they popped up advertising puppies or kittens for sale at Xmas..and most of my Enforcement included education and alerting the public about certain breeders who were underhandedly selling sick animals ..wondering how ruthless i was ? Here is one example:
My Brother owned a very good scale company business , he would go all over Nova Scotia and be gone a week at a time...Him and his wife bought a very expensive German Shepherd from a reputable breeder. One week when he was gone his wife had a backyard BBQ invited several family members ..My younger sister told me about an incident that my brothers wife caught the Shepherd taking a piece of steak off of the BBQ , Bro's wife took hold of the and shoved its face into the hot coals burning the dogs face and nose real bad...she locked the in the shed and didnt vet him...
I reported the incident to the Head Office and took my sister statement ..went back to my Bro's place asked the wife about what happened..asked to see the dog ...called my Bro who was on his way home..told him what happened ...also told him i was taking this to the Crown Attorney for prosecution..i took pics , then with the RCMP present i seized the read her rights to her then took the to the vet ...cost some bucks to vet him but he came back here with me...long story short she was prosecuted , and got a 10 year ban from owning any pets ...fined 2000.00 dollars and had to pay the vet bill ...The got a great home with very good owners..
Something to think about as the story ends , please do not support breeders... adopt from a shelter or rescue , where the pet comes with a story but they also come with lots of love and affection ..." pets are forever , not just for Xmas."

Please do not support backyard breeders try to adopt from a shelter or a rescue ...and there are reputable breeders out there who are conscientious and have the pets best interest at heart.

I so agree!!!!!! I see so may assholes getting pets like they are disposable diapers. Then get rid of them with no thoughts. I feel for animals that have to experience that!

I am glad you prosecuted your sister-in-law. I know that may have caused family drama but that animal did not deserve that at all!!!!!!!

yes I am ruthless and lost alot of family contact from that but wrong is wrong any way its cut..It probably was the hardest thing i ever done but i am not gonna turn the other cheek away from anyone who abuses an innocent animal that dog was the best...i had two dogs and couldnt keep him .The SPCA makes that decision to adopt animals out ..but i rescued horses dogs rats cats and a lizard one time so it was a menagerie of sorts ..

I feel like this will be a problem forever. Those doing this just don't care and whoever is making money from it obviously doesn't care either. I try not to judge a lot of people's choices, but those that treat animals like gifts only to want to be rid of them later are scum.

Animals as a gift is such a bad idea. The recipient doesn't get a feel for the dog or see if they get along before. Could absolutely gift a pet that is a bad match. Why bother?

you are right and as a friend of mine says "money buys you a pet, breeder spends it on anything but the health of the breeding dogs therefore money does not buy that bond that people experience when rescuing a pet from deplorable conditions...some how animals that are rescued seem e more appreciative of finding a forever home with owners that really care about them...we are not supposed to put animals above or on a pedestal but explain the pets emotional bond with an owner enough to look out for them in dire times.? its what i experienced once ...

Friends of mine years ago adopted a female Pug-Chihuahua mix from our local shelter, who turned out to be pregnant and gave birth to five pups. The shelter swore up and down that "you didn't get her from here" when friends tried to take her back shortly before the pups were weaned. So even that can happen also.

Long story short, two had congenital defects they succumbed to, and the three left were advertised in the local paper, a week before Xmas. They were advertised as "Free to good home: (blah blah blah). Not for baiting. Candidates will be screened. Serious inquiries only."

"Baiting", for those who aren't familiar with the term, is where puppies (and kittens/cats) of any size and breed are used as bait to train fighting dogs. It's a horrid and perverse practice that sadly still goes on.

Luckily all three pups went to good homes, as the friends and I knew most of the people here in the area who were looking for a small dog.

I know only too well what baiting is ..we had a serious problem with that here in the Preston area predom black neighborhood ..as an SPCA Officer we had to be prepared to handle most things and some were heart breaking...the owners of the pitbulls when they were made aware of a police raid when fighting was going on would throw their dogs in the garbage bins ..they would kill them and cut off any limbs and tattooed ears etc,,so the dogs couldnt be traced ...it was horrible ...thanks

Two parts to this reply, read carefully !
When my third wife & I were forcibly separated by her lieing to a judge and then calling cops when I was five mins from home ( I had texted her from the gas station & we had been texting each other for the last thirty-six hours as I drove across country), I was unable to reclaim my five cats I had at the time. Two weeks later after a judge had fined her for lieing to a previous judge as well as to him in court that day, I was given the right to reclaim my possessions as well as my pets, judge admonished her to not destroy or dispose of my property, and a date was set a week later for her convenience for my one day of possession removal. Unfortunately, I never dreamed she would do anything to harm my cats, so noting was said by the judge to NOT harm my cats. Upon arrival on the appointed day, I found she had imported a nasty cat hating dog, had tossed two of the five outdoors, and the dog had run them off. The other three, she had locked in a ten X ten room, not changing litterbox in the 4 weeks total since I had left on my trip to bury my father, and feeding and watering the three only when bowls were found to be empty ans she cared to check. Conditions in that room were unbelievable ! Due to the abuse, it took two hours to catch all three cats and put them in carriers. The cats outdoors were never seen again. And this was a woman who had been loving to all five of the cats for over five years !! One of the three survived the journey to my new home !!
Part two; As of four years ago, I was diagnosed with a rare & slow moving cancer, but had metastasized beyond favorable treatment. When last year, my cat that survived the DIVORCE episode/move, died a premature death (nine years old), I had to decide if I would go cat less the remainder of my life, or not. Knowing a cat would likely outlive me, I made a choice to seek a mature/senior/elderly cat as a companion, that needed a new home for whatever reason. I found a twelve yr old, but, she came with a six yr old sister ! Well, I adopted them both, they NEEDED ME!
This fall, the now thirteen yr old died, of kidney failure. So is just Me & the now seven yr old. She has had a companion cat all her life, so is very lonely, even tho I try to fill her days. I have considered finding another cat to be her companion, but know if same age they may not accept each other, and she might not accept any female cat at all ! So considering a boy cat, younger than her, but then comes the conundrum, the seven year old may not outlive ME, but a younger cat will almost certainly do so, and then my executor will be left with re-homing an adult cat or maybe two cats, which is very hard indeed. So I havnt made up my mind yet, which way to go, and only I can make this choice.
